Bats have recently been shown to be the reservoir hosts of a variety of zoonotic viruses responsible for severe human disease outbreaks, some with very high mortality. Dr. Linfa Wang, a CSIRO CEO Science Leader and member of the WHO SARS Scientific Advisory Committee, played a key role in the identification and characterization of most of these new bat viruses. He will focus his talk on three groups of bat viruses recently discovered in Australia, Malaysia and China.
